Farewell My Friends

It's been a long and winding road, full of joys and sadness, interrupted by moments of heartache and supplemented by streaks of glory. The webmaster business is a rocky one. It's tough to make a living as a web guy. My adventure was blessed by associating myself with the Art Bell show. I started this website before Art Bell was even connected to the web. Art was just starting to branch off from political fare into the paranormal. The program was ripe for a website complement to the show. I didn't have anything to publish on the web about myself, so I self-appointed myself as Art's webmaster.

The website developed over the years into an integral part of the show. I think we set the standard for how a website could complement a radio program and make it just as good as any TV program discussing these topics. The program was better than anything else, as it could dive deep into topics, with freedom to take the time needed to cover the material and keep it available on the website for years to follow. With the visual component added to an "audio-only" radio program, the Art Bell show exploded onto the paranormal scene and became the definitive forum for everything weird.

It's been fun most of the time, but as I alluded to, we had our rough times. Without sharing all the details, let me say that life attached to the Art Bell program has its ups and downs. You all know of Art's very public troubles with certain people and certain personal issues. While I hardly ever made my life as public as Art's, I've had my share of "guilty by association" troubles. But I put that all behind me as I celebrate the successes of the show. There is no other late night program like what Art Bell has built and I don't see another one happening soon. Art has set the standard and I hope I have contributed to the cause by being a factor in the program.

My original arrangement to operate this website was with Art himself when he was a private company, syndicating his show independently. Since I came along with the deal when Premiere Radio Networks purchased the Art Bell program, the network had to accept my presence and for a while wanted me to be part of the program, as they didn't have a web department and could not do a website for a radio program. Art has always been protective of my work on the website and has been supportive in keeping me as the webmaster of the site. I thank him for the years of support of my work.

Now with Art's retirement, the network has complete control of the program and the website. They have their own agenda for a website for C2C. I have had my issues with working for a large corporation. (I miss the days of a small dynamic group of people putting on a great program.) I could not see any scenario where I would be welcome to continue working for the program. The result is that I will retire from the program along with Art. Premiere Radio Networks will operate the new site as any large corporation would do. They have resources I'm sure that will far exceed anything I could ever provide. It remains to be seen if the intimacy of the program and the site will continue.

The current Art Bell .com website will go away. Since I'm not webmaster or the operator of the new site, none of the material I posted and maintained will be on the new site (except for the guest listings). That is why I hurriedly came up with the "CD-ROM of the website" offer. This is a way that you can still have a keepsake of the website. This is NOT a Premiere offer, the network is not involved in any way in the production or proceeds from this CD-ROM offer. This is my way of memorializing the site and help keep the content from being lost. I want to thank all the contributors to the site, for making the site the most interesting radio program site around.

Hopefully you have ordered your copy of the "Commemorative CD-ROM." This CD-ROM set will include stuff from old versions of the site that haven't been on the current site in years. I've got more stuff coming in faster than I have time to post. So when the program is finally over at the end of the year, I'll be able to take a couple weeks and go through all the remaining material I have and add it to the CD-ROM version of the site.

Since the inception of the Streamlink service Premiere Radio Networks would not allow sound clips from the program to be posted on the site and with Art's retirement, they will not allow any sound clips from the program to be included on the CD-ROM. The live streaming audio and program archives are supplied separately by the Interactive Services Department of Premiere Radio Networks. That part of the website is NOT under my control. So what I can offer on these CD-ROMs is everything I do have control over. I'm doing a full data dump of my email inbox and material saved over the years. I hope you'll appreciate my grand finale. I'll give you the stuff too weird to post, too stupid to post and too offensive to post. You'll get it all. If you are interested, you need to get your order in before the end of the year, because artbell.com will go dark and the links to our CD-ROM sales site will be gone. So check it out here at www.artbelloffer.com.

The company that is helping me with producing this CD-ROM, has also helped me to be able to provide an additional 2 in 1 CD, part one on Internet Security and part two on the Wacky Wild Web. I'm having lots of fun putting those together. I've got great information and material that was not appropriate for artbell.com, but is valuable for any Internet surfer or curious mind. I hope you will enjoy and learn from these additional offerings.

Enough about that, this is my farewell message to you, the website visitor. I am eternally grateful for each and every website visitor. Those who love it and those who hate it. I could not have been successful with the site without visitors. Additionally, the sponsors of the website are the ones who make it possible. I thank them also. In the early years, my previous partner Myron McCloud and I had to pay all the costs of operating the site. In later years, once we were recognized as a fixture of the Art Bell program, the sponsors have made it possible to recoup the cost of those lean years. And let me also thank those who have purchased products from the site and purchased books from Amazon, via links on our site. That is what brings this site to you.

So as I move on into the Ethernet, I will venture into other projects after a long and needed break from the stress of a high profile website. I'll be working on the CD-ROM product throughout January and then will be taking a break. You can keep up on my future ventures via my website at www.rowlandnet.com.

We'll all miss the Art Bell voice in the night, and it'll take a while for me to adjust to not being up with all of you every night, ready to respond to any weirdness of the program. I need this break, and I'll be hiding under the radar for a while. You can keep in touch with me through the GoToTalk.com Forums, as that will be my most public access point. I'm not sure which email addresses I will keep operational, as I need to disable many of them to keep out the spam.

Looking forward to the last program, Tuesday, Dec 31st, 2002. See you later down the road less traveled....
